Online Truth and Deceptions

Just how much do people lie online? Do you stretch the truth a little bit when you are filling out your profile? This article is an excellent piece from Scientific American on the truthfulness of online dating.
According to the research conducted by MIT and Boston University, a whooping 90% of the people actually exaggerate their dating profiles while only 20% admit to doing so. The research results also indicate that men tend to lie about their education, marital status, heights, and income. Women tend to lie about their weight, age, and looks. Another interesting fact is that the amount of exaggeration tends to increase with age. Is online dating really making an already serious commitment problem even worse?

Apparently through websites such as DontDateHimGirl.com and Womansavers.com people can actually post “anti-profiles”, or profiles of persons to watch out for (sort of like America’s Most Wanted for Internet Dating).
Have you checked to see if you’re on the most wanted list today? |

I’m for the first time on your blog spot and do enjoy “rambling” here.
This post is rather amusing but at the time it’s 100% realistic. Statistics - the science one can’t ignore. I must admit I also “stretch the truth” a little bit in my profiles (now I’m in those 20% :)) and it’ s always the “Body Type” section, I usually write “athletic” whereas… I’m… well… never mind, think I’m athletic ;-).
So, I’ll be watching you (just like The Police) every time I’m online. Hopefully you don’t mind adding you in my friends list.
Take care, Andy.

I love the “athletic” guys where you can tell from the picture they need to lose around 100 pounds! Also, I’ve come to realize that those who don’t have a public pic are trying to fool around on their mate, married or not….

There are more people on dating sites over 35.. it’s THE place to meet.
I remember when it wasn’t common and I met my husband who was half a
world away and my kids thought he was surely an axe murderer. How times
have changed.
