Blind Date turns into Soul Mate

My sister, a Health nurse for our part of the county had spoken to a teacher through a visit to the school where this young lady was teaching. After this visit my sister called me and told me I should give her a call; she seemed to be single and not involved with anyone.

It took a few days to get my nerve up but one evening I dialed her number and began my conversation with: “Hi, you don’t know me from Adam but….” One hour later, and with a date to a high school play at the school where I taught arranged, we ended our conversation.

Two weeks later I arrived at her door not knowing what to expect. She met me at the top of the stairs dressed in a pink outfit accented by a striking string of pearls around her neck. I was nervous at first but soon spellbound by her charm, sense of humor and the way she looked at me, not through me.

We drove the few miles to the auditorium talking intermittently mainly about the schools we were teaching at. After viewing the high school version of Camelot, we made our way to a lake front eatery for a late night dinner. After dinner we walked out to a warm summer-like evening which was complimented by a rare April meteor shower. This night of whirlwinds and comets continued as we walked arm-in-arm on the city docks towards the golden glow of the sun bouncing its rays off the windshield of the massive ship moored at the end. The yellow-orange aura seemed to make a path for us to follow as it made its descent west and we paused to take in the magic of this scene as if it were an omen.

Later we made our way back to the car and eventually to her apartment. There was no better time than this: the situation had seemingly been mapped out, the setting ideal, the plot ready to begin and the characters alive and vibrant. What else could I do? That evening, amidst the fire in the skies, love in Arthurian legend, and an easel sky I asked her out again.

“Yes”, she said.

“I’ll call tomorrow”, I replied.

Then, with a shy smile and a hug I left, feeling the radiance beaming from her soft cheek where it had brushed mine.

A year later I asked another question and she said, “Yes” again.

The girl I was nervous about meeting on that blind date has been my wife for twenty years and the touch of her cheek still leaves me feeling radiant.
